Driving Under The Influence (DUI) And Car Insurance Don’t Mix

Wednesday Mar 31, 2010

Drinking and driving is obviously a mistake for many reasons. One of the effects of a ‘driving under the influence’ conviction that many people fail to realize – is just how severely your car insurance rates can be affected. If you’re covered by a policy at the time you’re convicted of a DUI, your rates may increase dramatically or your policy may be canceled. If you don’t have car insurance at the time of a DUI conviction, you may find it very difficult securing future coverage.

Below, you’ll learn more about how drunk driving can affect your car insurance policy and your rates. We’ll also describe the purpose of an SR-22 form, which may be a requirement if you are convicted of a DUI offense and wish to legally drive again. Also, we’ll offer a few tips that you can use to get car insurance in the event that you’re caught driving under the influence.

The Purpose Of An SR-22 After a DUI Offense

Driving under the influence carries significant consequences. If you’re caught and convicted of a DUI, you’ll likely be required to file an SR-22. In its simplest form, an SR-22 is a legal statement (document) that validates that you have adequate car insurance coverage. An offender’s suspended driver’s license is usually returned when this statement is filed.

Most states (there are a few exceptions) legally require drivers who have received a DUI conviction to file an SR-22 with their local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Some car insurance carriers offer special SR-22 coverage for “high risk” drivers, charging much higher premiums. Other insurers won’t offer such coverage and will simply cancel a “high risk” driver’s policy.

An SR-22 form can be obtained from your auto insurance company (once they have decided to insure you) when purchasing your car insurance.

A DUI Can Remain Under The Radar – For a While

Occasionally there’s somewhat of a disconnect between the local court system and the local department of motor vehicles. DUI convictions are supposed to be delivered to the DMV that is located in the jurisdiction of the court. Sometimes, this fails to happen. When a DUI offense isn’t reported to a driver’s local DMV, that driver’s DUI offense may remain hidden, and that driver may be able to effectively avoid filing an SR-22, because their alcohol-related offense is not immediately discovered by their car insurance company. Though this does happen on occasion, insurance providers can eventually learn of a policyholder’s DUI – even years later, and act accordingly.

If You’ve Been Convicted, Don’t Wait To Shop Around For An SR-22 Insurance Policy

A common mistake among those who have been convicted of driving under the influence is waiting until their car insurance policy has been canceled before finding an alternative. If your current provider is canceling your policy, it’s likely because they know about your DUI from your driving record at the DMV. In that case, anticipate other providers discovering your DUI, too.

It’s much more difficult to find a carrier that is willing to offer an SR-22 insurance policy when you’re not already covered. Shop early while you still have coverage from your current carrier. If you find that the larger, established insurance carriers are unwilling to insure you, you may want to check with the independent agents in your area.

Picking Up The Pieces And Planning Ahead After a DUI

Driving under the influence can have a dramatic impact on your car insurance for several years. It can substantially increase your rates or cause your current provider to cancel your policy. In short, a DUI severely limits your options. But, if a DUI conviction is in your past, don’t let it dissuade you from shopping for car insurance. Assuming the DMV has recorded your DUI in their records, you’ll need to pay higher premiums for your policy, but, the alternative – driving without coverage – can lead to hefty penalties, financial loss and even jail time.

Remember, while a DUI conviction can stay on your record for a decade, car insurance companies will typically only use it for premium scoring for 3 years (sometimes less).

Obviously it’s in everyone’s best interest to just say no to drinking and driving. However, if you’re learning this lesson a bit late, it’s best to know your options, plan ahead and work diligently toward putting the experience behind you.

Tips to Chose Your Home Insurance

Wednesday Mar 31, 2010

Depending upon which home insurance company you are choosing, the price you pay for your home insurance can vary by thousand of dollars. Here are some important tips that can help you to choose the best home insurance without making you confused since there are thousands of home insurance policies available in the market.

A home insurance generally refers to an insurance policy which is a combination of all the protections for yourself and your home. In fact many home insurance policies even protect you from any sort accidents that can occur in your home. This is the reason a home insurance policy is often referred to as homeowners insurance. It is considered to be the largest investment of all and this is the reason it is very essential for you to choose the best policy to protect your home. A home insurance policy can cover various conditions including coverage against theft, lightening, fire, smoke, ice, snow or even frozen pipes.

Some important tips can make your work easy in choosing the best home insurance policy. Firstly, keep in mind to visit many home insurance companies and obtain their individual quotes. The best way to save money would be to visit no less than ten insurance companies so that you can easily figure out the best deal after you compare all the quotes. This can save you hundreds of dollars ranging from $500 to $1100 on your yearly premium that you have to pay for the home insurance you choose. You can even log into a comparison website where you can find different rate quotes from various insurance companies and after comparing those quotes, you can choose the best one for your home. Many comparison websites also offer advice from insurance experts on call helping you to get your queries answered on the spot.

You can even raise the deductible so that you can easily save nearly 30% on the premium you pay for the insurance company. If you are planning to buy your home insurance and auto insurance, try to purchase both the insurance policies from the same company since consolidation helps you to save nearly 30% on your insurance. Another good tip for getting a healthy amount discounted from your premium would be to purchase and install dead-bolt locks, window locks, burglar alarms and other security lights for your home.

Before applying for the home insurance, please be sure that you are insuring only your home and not the land. Many insurance companies will try to convince you to insure both your home and land, but always remember insuring your land is totally useless. Another tip would be to apply for a senior discount if you are more than 55 years. Don’t forget to submit the proper age proof for availing the discount.

Lastly, check that you have a good credit rating since nowadays many insurance companies use credit reports to determine your risk factor. Therefore prepare a healthy credit report and check that you have all types of invalid entries removed to obtain a good home insurance policy from the company.

anywhere for cheap young driver car insurance?

Wednesday Mar 31, 2010

Hi everyone, I am an 18 year old male with a 2.0 petrol Ford Focus 1999 5dr hatchback and my monthly outgoing for car insurance is £145! (I don’t even know the annual premium) but that is third party and I am only a named driver on my mums policy with 2 years of no claims. I have NEVER crashed or damaged anyone elses property in any way. I understand that young driver insurance is expensive but my insurance still seems to be twice as expensive as any of my friends. Could someone please point me in the direction of a young driver specialist insurance who is actually cheap as I have been on these websites before and I get quoted ridiculous figures such as £12,000! Please help me I am pulling my hair out.
Also there are no modifications on my car.
I live in the UK and so US sites are no good, Thanks…

There are no young driver specialists.

If the car is really yours and you are really the main driver then you and Mum are committing insurance fraud. This is called "Fronting" – see the bbc news link below for independent details of the world of hurt you are opening yourself up to. if you try to claim there is a good chance you will be detected. if stopped by the Police they do have ways to find out and know full well what to watch for.

My guess is that you are fronting as you called it your insurance. The problem you have is that the car is too large and engine for a teen to get cover on at a reasonable price. Trying to run before you can walk. You need to be in a 1.0 to 1.2 litre motor with no mods

I think my insurance agent scammed me…advice anyone?

Wednesday Mar 31, 2010

Here’s the situation. My policy renewed automatically, but my agent neglected to renew my auto-withdrawal. So my policy goes into default for lack of payment and is eventually cancelled. This happens without my knoledge as I was out of the state attending training for a new job. When I returned home, I found this out and started the process of getting my insurance renewed.

I received a few quotes, all about the same price so I elected to stay with my previous agent. I spoke with him over the phone one night as I was preparing to move to Utah, and I confessed that I needed insurance NOW because I was getting in the car and driving there. He put together a quick estimate of "about $100 a month." I told him to go ahead and resign me, and gave him the authorization to renew my policy.

A week later, the charge showed up in my checking account for DOUBLE what he had originally quoted me. I called him and asked and he told me that was the penalty for allowing my insurance to lapse.
My agent is with AAA so its not really a question of trying to get the cheapest possible insurance. My real issue is that I was quoted one price then charged another. I am not disputing the rates, its their product and they have the right to charge whatever they feel like charging for it. Just like its my right to go to a diffrent company because I think their rates are too high.

Coincidentally, I would have done exactly that if only I had been given a quote that was accurate. A quote is supposed to be a quote, not a guess. Any significant deviation from the quote (say being off by 100%) should warrant at the very least a phone call to me to authorize the higher charge.

That was not done. My issue is that I was quoted one price and then charged a completely different amount than what I had been quoted, with no authorization on the higher charge.

Sorry, your agent isn’t responsible for holding your hand and making sure things are done just as you want them done. Someone was getting your mail and got the letter that said "If you don’t pay, we will cancel". Also you should have noticed the money wasn’t going out of your account every month.

Yes, when insurance lapses, for any reason, there is a penalty that gets paid.

It’s amazing you saw that but missed 3 months of no payment.
